N icolas Cage is the greatest American actor working today, full stop. Not very long ago, such a claim would have got you laughed out of the room. Only Cage superfans said such things; in the eyes of the rest of the world, well, sure, he could act — he did win the Oscar for Leaving Las Vegas, after all — but he was too eccentric, too laughably over the top, just too damn Cage-y to be taken seriously.

Soon talented directors like David Lynch and the Coen Brothers took notice of his talent, as did critics.
Though don't get me wrong, there's always room for some of that too. To be honest, I thought the remake of Bangkok Dangerous was awful and just recently wrote a tear-filled review of Season of The Witchso I'm not oblivious to the missteps, but thought that Next and Knowing were perfectly watchable, if flawed, entertainment. But look at what surrounded those films. Just try and name an actor that hasn't made a few mistakes and be grateful that at least Cage didn't just stick to romcoms when he had the chance, or to pure action after Jerry Bruckheimer started him on that path.
